Winky D Injects Zimdancehall at Coke Studio Africa 2019

 

Zimbabwean dancehall singer and songwriter Winky D is one the leading forces propelling Zimdancehall – a compelling fusion of reggae and dancehall – to newer heights across Africa. The award-winning superstar popularly known as ‘Gafa’ is famed for his unique and captivating twist on Reggae, Dub, Dancehall and Afro-pop, and has managed to keep music lovers on their feet with his catchy tunes for over a decade now.

 

 

Coke Studio Africa Experience

Winky D is set to mark his debut on the upcoming season of Coke Studio Africa paired with Mozambican singer Messias. Speaking on his experience he says: “It’s really great… I get to meet and exchange ideas with people from different backgrounds, genres, cultures and vibe. Coke Studio Africa is a good platform for the interaction and integration of different music industries in Africa. I also learnt how the different music fraternities are fairing on in their regions.”

 

On music collaborations

A master collaborator, Winky D is known to inject a distinct flavour whenever he hops on beats. His massive collaborations like ‘’Ngirozi” featuring Vabati VaJehovah, ‘’Panorwadza Moyo” featuring Oliver Mtukudzi and ‘’Rugare’’ with Buffalo Souljah have performed exponentially well on the charts. On whether he has plans to collaborate with more Coke Studio Africa stars he notes: “I’m very much open to work with more, the recording process at Coke Studio Africa is rather demanding but once it’s done I’ll explore, discover and work with some of the artists on the show.”

 

Zimbabwean Music Scene

Featuring unapologetic social commentary in his compositions, he continues to capture the imagination of his loyal fans throughout Africa. Some of his chart-topping hits over the years include “Disappear”, “Ndiri Rasta”, and “Musarova Bigman” among others. He praises the Zimbabwean music scene for increasingly growing and cutting a niche for itself within the continent. He touts the scene as a dynamic one where several music genres coexist: “We have a fusion of different genres, from Hip Hop, Dancehall, Afrobeats but the most dominant vibe right now is ZimDancehall. We have the Oliver Mtukudzis, the Ammara Browns, the Killer Ts, the Takuras; there’s an endless list of artists all of them creating great vibes right now.”
