Masala learnt how to play the piano from watching her sister play and she also learned the recorder in both primary and secondary school. She has since picked up different instruments among them guitar, harmonica however her principle instrument is the cello which was bought for her sister who didn’t have time to pursue the instrument.
Masala affirms that her motivation to pursue music stemmed from the joy that comes with making music. She says “It fills me with a great feeling in purposefulness, like I can accomplish anything and change the world and impact other people so that they too can experience the joy of making music.”
Masala’s favourite musical genres are Jazz, Afro fusion/funk, Blues, Soul and Classical music She however describes herself as an 'instrumentals' kind of gal and she tends to pay more attention to the instrumental part of songs rather than the lyrics. She loves listening to Coldplay Soweto String Quartet, Oliver Mtukudzi, Joe Mafela, Hugh Masekela, Sonny Boy Williamson, Freshly Ground, Asa, Eric Wainaina, Ramin Djawadi, and Hans Zimmer!
She has played for the National Youth Orchestra and has obtained admission by the Italian Government to study cello on scholarship in Italy from January 2015. This is one of the biggest opportunities Masala has had so far in my musical journey and this will definitely open doors to many more opportunities.
