Owuor Arunga had always wanted to make art life, and life art – as he describes it, as a child and he has been able to live the dream of a Jazz artiste. The Jazz cat took it upon himself to practice long hours and take his time listening to other established Jazz artistes and each day he learnt a thing or two.
He is now the official trumpeter for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and worked on their Grammy-award winning album: The Heist. The Heist team also received 6 MTV VMA nominations in 2013 when they dropped the album.
As a young kid, Owuor knew he wanted to play the trumpet when he saw a man play the trumpet in an advertisement on Television and it blew him away. He took it up and ran with it making it what his heart beats for since.
He went to New York in the early 2000’s to get more Jazz experience and knowledge. His teachers included Olu Dara (Nas’s Father), Jimmy Owens and Ahmed Abdullah where he learned under the Apprenticeship systems at The New School University.
His work has earned him various names such as “Dizzy Gillespie of hip-hop” The pied piper, SuperJazzman Owuor and Sultan of Swag.
He is born and bred in Kisumu, Kenya in a family of four but later moved to Seattle in 2000 where he is currently based.
Ben Haggerty a.k.a Macklemore went to the same high school in USA with Owuor. That’s how they first met and remained good friends long after clearing and that’s how he got to team up in music.
