Remember the Redhead with a husky voice in Dorobucci, yes - that’s her! It may look like Mavin Records brought her to the limelight but she already had her foot in the door with tracks like Rock Steady. Her single Yaro was her first track under the Mavin stable. She is only getting started and doesn’t seem to back down anytime soon. Lets see what surprises she has in store for Coke Studio Season 3.
Hadiza Blell better known as Di’ja is a Sierra Leon born Nigerian based recording artist, songwriter, visual artist and fashion designer. Her music can be described as a mix of pop, reggae and R&B. She released her first single “Rock Steady” in 2009, a year after she began her music career. Her first single was nominated for the Best Urban/ R&B Single at the 2009 Canadian Radio Music Awards.
She is influenced by various artists including Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Tracy Chapman, Diana Ross, The Everly Brothers, Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, Beyoncé, Madonna and Tupac. Not only is she inspired by a musician’s music, but also how they use their music to touch lives.
Di’Ja’s break through came after she won ‘The Beat Music Awards’ talent search in Canada where she was a student. Out of that she got a production deal with a recording label. She got to work with Don Jazzy and the Marvin Family who have had a major influence on her musical background. She has done a couple of singles like “How can we be friends” and “Private show” and her goal is to become a very successful West African woman in both entertainment and academics.
It all adds up. Young entrants should keep working on their dreams and should not lose focus.
Di’Ja also values her education. She has two degrees, one in biology and the other in psychology. She chose to pursue music, her first love.
She unwinds by drawing and eating. She also likes to work with children as she is passionate about them.
