Obuya “Chalo T” Owino started playing drums after high school, learning from the late great master percussionist, Coco Malali.
He planted his roots thereafter at the Kenya National Theatre, further developing his skills in afro-jazz, afro-traditional, and reggae beats.
He’s been part of a number of bands and album recordings including Kikwetu, Jazz Tu, Mystik Natural, Owiny Sigoma, BLNRB Berlin-Nairobi, Kachumbari 7, and many more.
Obuya has performed in Canada, Europe, Japan, Qatar and all around Kenya.
When he’s not performing with the Coke Studio Africa band, he can be found recording in the studio, teaching music students, co-hosting a community-based drum circle, or spending time with his biggest fans: his beautiful family.
