DIANA MAYAKA ONDENGO

Coke Studio Africa 4 background vocalist Diana Mayaka makes her debut on the show this year. She says that she has been singing for over ten years but it’s been a hobby that she’s been into far longer than that. Diana’s genre of choice is R&B/gospel.

She still serves as a church singer while not on working on Coke Studio Africa’s busy schedule. She talked about her first time on Coke Studio Africa: “It’s been interesting and good. There are also some crazy moments. However, the show has enabled me to get out of my comfort zone, which is a church background. In overall it’s a good learning experience.”

Diana’s career highlights include singing at church, Coke Studio Africa and recording several of her solo songs that she says will be released in 2017. She says that she is open to be signed to a label. She says, “You can never know everything especially in the media industry so I am open to getting management.”

Diana says that she is musically inspired by Coke Studio Africa 4 Kenyan singer Dela Maranga. As for internationally, artistes she is inspired by gospel music singers like Kierra Sheard and Tasha Cobbs. She says that she would like to collaborate on a solo project with Coke Studio Africa 4 artiste from Nigeria Waje. “I loved her personality when I met her, she is very humble and wants to know more even though she is such a great vocalist.”

Starting off her singing at church, Diana credits gospel music as her number one inspiration. She was brought up in a family of spiritual parents. She says, “My Dad had a church in Dandora, he still has it. I started by leading worship in that church and I continued to sing at church even at school. My late mum also used to sing and travel on tour singing around the world,” she concludes
