WAJE

As soon as her voice hit the airwaves in MI’s One Naira, there was no stopping Nigerian power vocalist Waje. She is celebrated as one of the most unique singers to come out of Africa this decade, and not only because her vocal range covers three octaves. She is also known for her glamorous and dramatic creative direction, in hit singles including Omini Knowest, Onye featuring Tiwa Savage, Coco Baby featuring Diamond Platnumz and Left for Good featuring Patoranking.

CAREER

Waje released her debut self-titled solo album in 2013 and is already a multiple award winning artist. Her gongs include Best Female Vocalist at the Hip Hop World Awards Headies (2011) and Best Vocal Performance at South South Awards (2010). She has shared the stage with international music acts like Wyclef Jean and Kerry Hilson. In 2015, she headlined in the song Strong Girl — the theme song of ONE’s ‘Poverty is Sexist’ Campaign. She later joined Bono in Lagos for the same campaign. Most recently, she was a judge on the inaugural season of The Voice Nigeria.

MUSIC INTEREST

Fame would come her way when she remade P Square’s hit Do Me. She participated in MTV South Africa’s Advanced Warning reality TV show and emerged as the first runner up. By the time she released her single For A Minute, Waje had cemented her position as one of Nigeria’s biggest acts to watch. Since then, she has gone on to release her debut album and has enjoyed both critical and commercial acclaim as a respected musician in Africa.

BACKGROUND

Waje was born in Akure, Ondo State in Nigeria but grew up in Benin City, Edo State. She is the first child in her family. As a teenager, she sang in the Word of Faith Group of Schools choir, where she impressed its founder Archbishop Benson Idahosa, who proceeded to give the talented young girl a scholarship throughout her secondary school. She attended the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she took part in school concerts and fellowships. Drawing inspiration from the works of Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, Waje honed her music skills in school and was soon a popular performer in the state.
