Angolan artiste Yuri da Cunha is a legend to say the least. With a musical career spanning twenty-two years, he continues to receive international awards and accolades, thanks to his crossover sounds like the hit song Atchu Tchutcha. Incorporating musical styles like Semba, Kizomba, Zouk, Kilapanga, Kazucuta and Kintuene, the music star has contributed to the international growth of the Angolan music, especially in Semba. The AFRIMA award-winner in the category of Best Male Singer of Central Africa makes his debut in Coke Studio Africa Season 4, in 2016, paired with Nigeria’s Flavour.
Ahead of his first album “It’s all Love” Yuri made an appearance on a renowned radio program for children to launch his debut song Friend in 1994. He has since released three more albums. His awards include Top of the Most Dear and best release in the Top Radio Luanda Contest. He has also performed widely in Europe. A 2009 tour with Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti saw him sell sixty shows in Europe celebrating the release of his third album “Kuma Kwa Kie” (Dawn in Portuguese).
Yuri’s music has been gone beyond his native land. Hits such as Atchu Tchutcha and Gago have achieved global success, and continue to garner wide airplay. He continues to release quality music, which mostly gets the audience quick on their feet to dance.
Yuri da Cunha was born in Sumbe, Kwanza Sul Province. He started his artistic career by winning a street competition in his native land. It is from here that he started his musical journey began and has continued to flourish.
