WHO IS MR. MEODIE ?

Rwanda makes its entry into Coke Studio Africa this year via R&B musician Bruce Melodie, known for hit records such as “Ndumiwe” and “Incwi”. Bruce has been paired with popular Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones known for his quick rap flow and bangers like “Micasa Sucasa”. The pairing will be coordinated by superstar South African music producer DJ Maphorisa.

Bruce is a 2017 nominee at Uganda’s Hipipo Music Awards in the Song of the Year (Rwanda) category with “Turaberanye”. He is also a two-time winner of Best R&B artist of the Year at the Salax Awards (2013, 2014).

MR. INDEPENDENT

Among the qualities that make Bruce Melodie stand out is his talent and versatility. The singer/songwriter is also a composer and music producer. His debut album “Ndumiwe” dropped in August 2013 while he was signed to The Super Level - a highly ranked music label in Rwanda. Elevating him to instant fame, the album delivered various chart favourites like “Ndumiwe”, “Tubivemo” and “Incwi” featuring Ugandan artist Jamal and “Music” with Radio of the Ugandan duo Radio & Weasel. Melodie’s second studio album “Ntundize” dropped in 2014 and followed the success of his debut compilation with popular songs like “Ntundize” and “Ntujya Unkinisha” doing better in the regional market.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Bruce Melodie started moulding his vocal talent from an early age, singing in the Main Choir at a local church – which inspired him to become a record producer. Bruce would later serve as a back up singer for several established artists in Rwanda. Motivated by the success of budding music groups like Kigali Boys and Family Squad, Bruce decided to pursue a professional music career.

THE BACK STORY

Born in Kanombe Village, Disctrict of Kicukiro in Kigali to a father who served as a soldier and mother who owned a small business in a village, Bruce has three siblings.

He attended Camp Kanombe Primary School before completing his secondary school studies at Rwamagana Islamic Secondary School. He is married and has a daughter, Itahiwacu Britta, who was born in 2015. Away from music, Bruce’s hobbies include acting, and he has been celebrated for featuring in one of the locally aclaimed TV series “Seburikoko”.
