THE BAND BECA

WHO THEY ARE

The Band BeCa is a music group comprising Becky Sangolo and Carol Kamweru from Kenya. The duo is known for songs such as Toka and Brathe, which have a unique dancehall and alternative reggae style to them. The pair were named in MTV’s list for African stars to watch in 2017. They make their debut on Coke Studio Africa 2017 as Big Break Artists and are collaborating with AKA (SA) and Olamide (Nigeria).

BREAK THROUGH TO THE LIME LIGHT

The careers of The Band BeCa’s members kick started soon after they completed high school in 2015. Each of them asked their parents to pay for a vocal training course at Penya Africa’s Sauti Academy - a music school and talent incubation Centre based in Nairobi. By 2016, the duo had released their first single Toka, followed by Brathe in December 2016. They would later release three versions of Brathe and by February 2017, dropped a collaboration titled Tonight.

THE BUZZ

The duo has been named among The Fresh Class of 2017 by Kenya’s top entertainment magazine Pulse and also listed on MTV Africa's 2017 List of New Artistes to Watch. They recently released a cover of the gospel song Maua, originally done by Zealani.

FORMATION AND EARLY CAREER

The Band BeCa was formed at Penya Africa’s Sauti Academy, where the two band members met. Immediately after their vocal training course, the ladies started singing for some Kenyan bands as background vocalists. They are strong proponents of reintroducing arts and music to the Kenyan school curriculum as it played a major role in shaping who they are right now.
