Popular Ethiopian songstress Mahlet Gebregiorg (Mahi) is known for her soulful voice and eccentric music tunes, sung in various languages on top of Tigrigna, the Afro-Asiatic language of the Horn of Africa. She makes her debut on Coke Studio Africa 2019, paired alongside Rayvanny (Tanzania), with their music collaborations produced by the super talent from Tanzania; Lizer. Some of the songs that have contributed to her rise to fame include “Haneta”, “Kunama” and “Hizimbele”.

The release of her first single “Bey Ney Terife” in 2005 catapulted her to fame. From there, she started building her reputation in the Ethiopian music scene. Being her first attempt to perform a song in her country’s own genres, “Bey Ney Terife” earned her a 2005/2006 Tigray All Arts Award (TARTA). She has since toured and performed across Ethiopia, the United States, Europe and Australia.

Mahlet started making a name for herself in the industry from her teen years in the 2000s, following the release of her debut album “Wesine”. In 2017, she was appointed as a goodwill ambassador by Deutsche Gesellshaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit, (GIZ) as part of its strategy to help change the narrative in Ethiopia. While growing up, Mahlet developed a passion for music. With a resolve to pursue a music career, her sound would be heavily inspired by the works of the legendary Tigrigna singer, Nigist Hayelom.

Mahlet Gebregiorgis was born and raised in the Northern Region of Ethiopia called Tigray, before moving to the capital Addis Ababa to pursue a career in music. Her interest in taking music started at an early age, when she auditioned to join her school choir. Today, she is one of the most influential artists in Ethiopia.
