When you mention Nigerian artists who propelled the genre of Afrobeats to the fore, Nigerian artist Skales and his arms length of hit songs including “Shake Yo Body” comes to mind. With over 250 songs to his name, Skales has had an expansive music career for over a decade now, and has collaborated with the crème de la crème in music across the globe, notably Wizkid, Major Lazer, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Olamide and Nicki Minaj. His music is an eclectic mix of pop, afrobeat and rap. The “Booty Language” hit maker makes his debut on Coke Studio Africa 2019 where he will be performing alongside Tanzanian songstress Nandy, and their collaborations will be produced by acclaimed Nigerian talent GospelOnDeBeatz (Nigeria).
Currently signed to Baseline Records, Skales’ discography boasts of hits that have taken over Africa, including “Currency” featuring Davido, “Agolo”, “Temper” with Burna Boy, and “Fire Waist” featuring Harmonize. He was part of the “Run Up” - Afrosmash remix by Major Lazer with Party Next Door, Yung L, Chopstix and Nicki Minaj. Skales has so far released three studio albums; Man of The Year (2015), his sophomore album Never Say Never (2017) and Mr. Love (2018). The new 16-track new album features artists such as Sarkodie, Rwanda's Neza, and Cassper Nyovest from South Africa.
Music has seen Skales perform in top music stages across the world. In November 2018, he performed at the One Africa Music Fest in Dubai alongside American rapper Fabulous and a host of top African stars. He is also the first Nigerian artist to co-headline a major reggae beach fest in Dubai with Kymani Marley. Additionally, Skales has toured the UK, Canada, Ethiopia, Seychelles, Uganda and several US cities on the Empire Mates Entertainment US Tour. He also graced the 2013 edition of Felaberation, a yearly concert dedicated to late Nigerian legend Fela Kuti.
Born Raoul John Njeng-Njeng in April 1991, Skales grew up in Kaduna, Nigeria. His interest in music piqued while spending time at his mother’s cassette store. He studied at the University of Jos and later switched to Lead City University, where he graduated with a degree in Office Management and Technology. While attending the University of Jos he took part in the Zain Tru Search competition and won the competition's North Central region edition. In 2008, Skales started his professional music career and released his debut singles “Must Shine” and “Heading for a Grammy”. A year later, he got signed to Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) before leaving in 2014 to start his own label, OHK Music. He says that joining Coke Studio Africa is one of his biggest dreams and career highlights, to date.
