SHEEBAH KARUNGI

Celebrated Ugandan recording artist and dancer Sheebah Karungi catapulted into the music industry with the all-girl dance group, Obsessions. She has been at the top of her game since her solo debut and has even won several awards including Female Artist of the Year and Artist of The Year at the Uganda Music Awards (2017). Sheebah is a bona fide hit maker, ruling the airwaves across the region with hits such as “Nkwatako”, “Mummy Yo” and “Binkolera”. She returns to Coke Studio Africa on the 2019 edition paired with Harmonize (Tanzania) and GospelOnDaBeatz (Nigeria).

 

CAREER

Since launching her professional career in 2006 with Obsessions, Sheebah has been steadily rising as a stand-alone act. In 2010, she released her first official single "Kunyenyenza" followed by "Bulikyekola" featuring KS Alpha and "Baliwa" with Coco Finger. So far, she’s got four studio albums: Ice Cream (2014), Siri Zari (2015), Nkwatako (2016) and Karma Queen (2017).

 

MUSIC INTERESTS

Sheebah’s successful music career has seen her win a number of Ugandan awards such as Best Female Artist back to back since 2014, to date. In 2017, she won Best Collaboration of The Year at the Zzina Awards. In the same year, she was nominated for Best Female Artist Africa at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and the Young Achievers Award in Creative Arts. Her video “Kisasi Kimu” received a nomination for Video of The Year at the MTV Mama Awards (2016). She is a constant feature on the annual HiPipo Music Awards and Uganda Entertainment Awards. She is also an actress, and had a role in the 2016 Disney film, Queen of Katwe.

 

BACKGROUND

Sheebah Karungi was born and raised in Kawempe, Uganda. After completing her basic education at Kawempe Muslim Primary School, she joined Midland High School. At the age of 15, she started dancing and joined a dance group called Stingers before leaving the group for Obsessions Music Group in 2006. It was at Obsessions that she developed an interest in music, recording two songs before she leaving the group to pursue a solo career in music.
