3 Things Nigeria Loved on Coke Studio Africa

Ms. Anyiko Owoko | NEWS | 7 January, 2016

The third season of Coke Studio Africa was amazing. Boasting top Nigerian acts including 2Face Idibia, Olamide, Yemi Alade, Flavour, M.I and Chidinma – there was a lot to take, and thankfully the audience was charged. Different segments like the Cyphers, Coketales and Showcases emerged as favourites, among a number of artist pairings.

We had to break all the good things into the three main reasons why Nigeria loved the show this season. Here goes

The mash up concept

Music lovers are used to the collabo format that was on the show previously. The fact that the show’s producer’s spiced things up this season was a beautiful surprise to most Nigerians. Spearheaded by top Nigerian music producers: Chopstix, Cobhams Asuquo and Masterkraft among others, some of the favourite mash ups were between Nigerian rap princess Eva Alordia and Uganda’s Chameleone; and Kenya’s Elani with Nigeria’s Chidinma. Produced by Silvastone, the Emi ni baller/Jana Usiku Coke Studio Africa mash up was one of the most seamless. Watch it again

First Couple of the show

Last season it was Flavour and Kenya’s Victoria Kimani who were the fans’ favourite coupling. This season Flavour does it again with yet another diva – Uganda’s sultry singer Juliana Kanyomozi. Their mash ups; including Ololufe/Haturudi NyumaNakupenda and Shake/Woman rocked Nigeria. Even though Juliana would sing in Swahili and Luganda, she really touched fans in West Africa. Their chemistry was also something that got people talking. They should be in a relationship in 2016 – that’s all.

The King & Queen of all Mash Ups

This was a tough one because there were many amazing mash ups. But it was Nigeria’s No. 1 most respected artiste 2 Baba a.k.a 2Face Idibia and Tanzanian songbird Vanessa Mdee who came up top. Written and crafted by wizard producer Cobhams Asuquo, the mash up All I Need to Know was Nigeria’s best of the best. The song even got to play on local radio and climb charts. Vanessa said she was honoured to work with 2Face and thanks to his input, she got her first 1 million views on a YouTube video.
