Top African Artistes Awarded at MTV Africa Music Awards 2016

The achievement and contribution of African stars in the music industry over the past year was celebrated with flair and admiration at the just concluded MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) in South Africa, held on 22nd October at Johannesburg’s Ticketpro Dome.

Emerging as the frontrunners were several Coke Studio Africa artistes, taking home six out of a total 13 trophies at the ceremony. All in all, 22 Coke Studio Africa artistes had garnered 28 nominations between them. The Listeners Choice category pulled in the most Coke Studio nominees including Lij Michael, The Kansoul, Yamoto Band, Kiss Daniel and E.L.

Among the big winners at the MAMAs was Kenyan music group Sauti Sol - crowned Africa’s Best Group, securing East Africa’s only award from the ceremony. They called the award a career highlight for them and East Africa as a whole, thanking MTV for celebrating African music and achievement.

Nigerian songstress Yemi Alade, who also co-hosted the MAMAs event, took home the Best Female crown for the second year in a row. Yemi was accompanied to the event by her mother, whom she called her superstar and “My King” on Instagram, soon after the win.

It was also a big night for some Coke Studio Africa first-timers. Patoranking (Nigeria) took the award for Song of the Year for My Woman My Everything and thanked his fans for their loyalty. DJ Maphorisa (South Africa) took home the Best Collaboration award for Soweto Baby while Ivory Coast’s Serge Beynaud was awarded the gong for Best Francophone. DJ Maphorisa thanked his collaborators and promised his fans even more hits.

South African Hip Hop artiste Emtee clinched the controversial Best Hip Hop award. He features on Coke Studio Africa season 4 this year, collaborating with select African superstars and American hip hop/R&B great Trey Songz.
