This Malawaian music producer based in South Africa, Gemini Major, was formerly signed to Cassper Nyovest’s label: Family Tree Records. In 2017, he is breaking bad going solo with his own label imprint. He will also be on Coke Studio Africa for the first time; producing South Africa’s Shekhinah and Tresor, among other artists from Ethiopia, Uganda and Cameroon. We spoke to him about his Coke Studio Africa debut.
After “Ragga Ragga” it’s “Bang Bang”
Gemini Major is still making waves with the hit single Raga Raga, which is currently riding high in South Africa. After featuring Riky Rick, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai and Major League DJz in the massive track, Gemini is ready to take over again with a new single Bang Bang featuring Coke Studio Africa – 2017 artist: Patoranking. He exclusively released the single while recording the show in Kenya and confirmed that it would officially be released in August 2017.
Many people mistake Gemini to be South African because he is based in that country, but he reveals: “I was born and raised in Malawi, I only got to South Africa in 2008. After I did my diploma I went to South Africa for a holiday and I stayed there. I started working and pushing my dream in music. By 2010 I started coming up slowly.”
On Coke Studio Africa Experience
Gemini terms the whole experience as edutaining. He says: “It’s been amazing! It’s not just about working with different artists but learning their cultures as they are learning from me. As a producer - you get two artists from different backgrounds and they make different types of music. It’s your job to find the middle ground for the artists to connect to bridge the cultures, sounds and genres to make one unique thing.”
On Music as Life
Gemini Major draws inspiration from several artists, among them Wizkid, Burna Boy, Bob Marley and Bongani Fassie. He describes his sound and style as “Rockstarfari”.
“Music was definitely in me from when I was young. I used to be a dancer and I can say that since a young age I’ve been doing entertainment stuff for a long time.”
